our first weeks

It’s already been a month since we are here in Zambia. Time flys by. We had a lot of changes during the first time. We already stayed in 4 different accommodations so far and this is how our life will look like for the next few months.

One of our highlights was the “All Africa Retreat”. Meaning all Liebenzell missionaries who work on the continent of Africa came together in Zambia for a one-week retreat. We had a great time together. Bible studies. Encouragement. Good food. Sports. It was a smooth transitioning for us.

Right now we are in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. We arrived here two weeks ago and will be here for 8 more weeks to study Bemba, one of the local languages. Let me tell you, this is not the easiest thing to do. The tenses are pretty complex. The sentence structures are different than the English and German one. Plus our teacher is a Zambian what brings a principle of teaching with it, that we as Germans can not understand sometimes. Yes there were many times when we looked at each other and there was nothing but question marks. But we don’t want to give up, other people learned the language, so we can do it too. Patience needed! We are glad that we have each other and can motivate one another.

Our accommodation which is on the same campus as our language course is another challenge. It’s on a catholic education centre which is on the outskirts of Lusaka. There is not much going on here other than our course, one or two people who live in the same building as we do and a hand full of people working on the campus. So every now and than we try to get out of here and explore some parts of the city, what we really enjoy. We already found one or two nice coffee places where we enjoy going and are reminded of Toronto often.
